After going through the growth profile of family gatherings, the path away from home, the scenery and the trajectory of reading, it detours in the crisis of family, school and small town. He escaped from the coming-of-age ceremony when he was signed up because he was embarrassed by "becoming a man". After his parents divorced, he went to the betel nut stall run by his biological mother. He does not apologize, because everything is not wrong.
Hailing from the Puyuma people of Chishang, Taitung, up-and-coming aboriginal author Ma Yihang begins a journey of family reunions and separations, departure, and literacy. The homophone Mountain Talk is a “politically incorrect” word heavily saturated with inquiries of identity, space, households, and writing, yet Shandihua questions with a feminine voice, “Where is this label attached? What is hidden beneath?” And the loss of intimate dialogues of love, of lingering, of turmoil. Fettered by identity or gender, whether vibrant or sorrowful, witness Ma Yihang turn the stories of aboriginals, boys, women, and gays into their true voices, allowing their vividness to radiate forth with the force of a canon. In his mini-series, the terrors of everyday life are seen through the “Personal Picket Fence”; in “If I were Fong Fei-fei, Brother, You Would Definitely Want Me,” heartfelt feelings of a frustration more potent than wine are sung. Mountain Talk contains no teaching of his native language, yet the “mountain” is speaking to him; “Ask if You Don’t Understand” contains many things he doesn’t understand but also things he has been taught. “Shandihua” encompasses women, cupboards, mirrors, and children -- growing up or unable to grow up -- perhaps the meaning of femininity.
