Little does he know, the most formidable enemy is not the overbearing prosecutor, but a mysterious organization that preys upon the judicial system. It starts out looking like a case involving a simple car accident. Wen Shi thinks he could secure the most favorable ruling for his client Ni Kemo because the law is clearly on his client's side. Still, he is opposed by a tough prosecutor, Yang Zheng, who insists on pressing charges, and a hidebound judge. Wen Shi finds himself in an uphill legal battle. During negotiation for damages with the victim’s family, Wen Shi realizes there’s more going on behind the scene after over-stressed detective Qiu Pinzhi comes to him for help. Using a variety of unorthodox investigative methods, Wen digs up a strange cold case in which land deeds seemed to just vanish and the aggrieved landowner committed suicide. As the investigation goes on, the deaths pile up, and Wen Shi’s assistant, Shen Lingzhi, starts to notice mysterious people behaving strangely. The truth is ever more elusive. These elusive clues and mysterious entanglements also start to put Wen Shi and Lingzhi in grave danger. Wen Shi needs to find favorable evidence before the imminent closure of the case and rescue the kidnapped judge. Orchestrating the entangled web of events is the cabal “The Fire of Mount Carmel,” but none of the events would happen if the judicial system was not susceptible to manipulation. Is the judicial system a guardian of justice, or a perpetrator who rubs salt into the wound of the afflicted? What is sacrificed by matter-of-fact verdicts? What consequences do they bring? What is the cost of making things right?
