「如果犧牲無辜的人，卻能成就最多數人的最大幸福，我們是否能夠坦然接受？」 青年道士海麟子，與基層女警小吳，共同偵察民俗相關的連續殺人案，他們發現三位死者都被打扮成「捨身羅漢」的樣貌，頭戴砂鍋、身穿金甲、手持木劍、腳穿芒鞋，似乎是重大工程的人犧祭祀行為。但他在第一位死者身上發現的證物，卻是自己所出身的宗派——南明派的類似符咒。經由追查，他發現這三位死者分屬不同案件、各自在不同加害者與不同動機的因素下死亡。只有第三件案件的主謀是真正要進行「捨身羅漢」儀式，主謀甚至籌劃且真實搬演了經典道德兩難問題「電車事件」：在直播中讓全國觀眾決定，一列急駛中的火車要走哪條軌道、撞死哪些人？海麟子與小吳登上列車與主謀及其豢養的小鬼一決勝負，最終他們成功在造成傷亡之前停下火車，主謀卻帶著犧牲者引爆炸藥而死...

The protagonist, Hailinzi, is a handsome, young man, also a mobile gamer. In the meantime, he has a very sad past and is with heavy family secrets. This character is full of contrasts His assistant, Wu Shuang, is a police officer that brings all the cases to him. Wu Shuang wants to fight for justice. His brother is a police executive but he is still at entry level. Hailinzi will encounter different mysterious cases. These cases are related to history,culture or social issues in Taiwan. In his first case, it starts with Wu Shuang , the junior police officer. He discovers a corpse covered with spells in a temple in his jurisdiction. Soon, it is reported that another corpse in the lake in an urban park is found. These corpses are extremely weird: having a pot on the head , and wearing religious costumes. They look like a ritualistic sacrifice for construction works. Hailinzi finds out that, even though two corpses look unrelated, those spells and the costumes imply some religious rituals. Moreover, those spells in these photos look very similar to the spells of Hailinzi’s traditional Taoism school. Hailinzi brings the photos of corpses to his master, asking for a deeper examination. The master says, these are not our spells. What is the reason that amateurs need to dress up people like this? Why do people put the corpse in such a costume? Out of his curiosity, Hailinzi investigates the incident with Wu Shuang. As they dig deeper for the truth behind, they realize that the answer isn’t only about supernatural things. It is related to grieving conditions, long-term care system and homeless issues in Taiwan. It looks like a religious murder at a glance, as the story proceeds, it is connected to fundamental social issues in Taiwan.
