從沒愛過人的昆蟲學家遠渡重洋，來到亞熱帶島嶼上的一座製糖小鎮，想找到一種據傳能「吞掉悲傷」的糖白色大蝴蝶，卻在這兒碰上了兩個孩子──古里古怪、天馬行空的女孩和身上散發神祕糖果香氣的男孩。孩子們拖著昆蟲學家在鎮上東偷西找，搜集材料，他們想煮出一碗喝了就能把一切都忘光的魔法湯。 探險尋覓的過程裡，昆蟲學家和兩個孩子說了三個故事，分別關於追逐黑色災禍的喜黑甲蟲，模仿星空的小真菌蚋，和有能耐使人一睡不醒的采采蠅。 ---- 對世界失望透頂的流浪漢在尋死的這天，幫助了個神祕的男孩。跟著男孩回家，想在死前飽餐一頓的他，卻不小心解除封印，放出了個透灰色的「鬼」。鬼魂和他說了三個夢境，分別關於黑影裡的老師、擦身而過的星光，和夢醒了也等不來的母親。 古怪的是，每個夢深處都有一種蟲。蟲子好像在提醒他，夢不只是夢，而是用盡全力，怎麼也說不出口的祕密。 ──為了好好地長大，我們都必須付出一些代價。
An entomologist, who has never loved before, travels to a sugar-manufacturing town on a subtropical island, hoping to find a kind of sugar-white butterfly that allegedly can burn away sadness. Here, he encounters two children, one quirky, imaginative girl and a boy who has a mysterious sugary scent about him. The children drag the entomologist with them across the town, gathering and stealing ingredients. They want to make a magic soup that can erase sorrows. During their small adventures, the entomologist tells the children three stories about three insects: the troubled fire beetles that chase after disasters, the glowworms that fall in love with distant stars, and the tsetse fly that can make you tumble into a sleep-like death. A vagabond, utterly disappointed in the world, helps a mysterious boy right before his scheduled suicide. Following the boy back home, the vagabond thinks to himself, hmm maybe it wouldn't be so bad to have one last meal before death. Little does he know he would accidentally lift the seal and set free a ghost. The ghost tells the vagabond three curious dreams, respectively about a child who falls in love with a voice in the dark, a teenager who runs away from home, and a mother who never shows up. Oddly enough, in every single dream of the ghost, there is a kind of insect. It is as if they are there to remind the vagabond that dreams are never just dreams. Sometimes, they can be dark secrets that you cannot pronounce in plain words. "Are these just dreams?" "Isn't the best kind of dreams... the ones that can wake you up properly?"
