Yu-Li returns to his hometown to handle the funeral for the only remaining member of his family. An outstanding and very familiar looking oil painting in his hotel catches his eyes. Staying several extra days, he learns that the anonymous painter is Xiu-Mei, who works at the hotel. This young and talented woman is tormented by a forbidden love with a married painter — the same painter who was the reason for Yu-Li's forced departure from his hometown.

長年在國外從事藝術品經紀的玉里回鄉治喪後要再次離開國門時，無意間在落腳旅館的小型畫展中看見一幅熟悉的油彩，不論構圖、筆觸或風格都與十幾年前一位已故畫家描繪的海景畫極度相似。 他決定多停留幾天找出這位匿名畫家，四處打探之後發現畫家就是在他投宿之處的年輕女服務生秀美，訝異於她成熟精湛的才華之餘，也得知她正與一名在校任職教授且享有名氣已有家室的畫家陷於不倫戀當中。 他想找出秀美為何能畫出那幅熟悉油彩的原因，想忽略她沉溺的不倫戀情，專注於挖掘她的藝術才華，但在漸漸與她熟識後，玉里才發現他不是第一次見到秀美，早在求學時他就見過幼時的她，甚至熟識她已逝的母親。
Yu-Li is a long-time overseas art dealer who returns to his hometown to handle a funeral. When he is preparing to leave again, he happens upon a familiar oil painting in a small exhibit in his hotel. The composition and style of the oceanic scene it depicts are almost identical to those of a painting whose creator passed away a dozen years ago. He resolves to uncover the anonymous painter’s identity and decides to stay a few extra days. After a laborious search, he discovers that the artist is Xiu-Mei, a young woman who works at the hotel. Yu-Li is amazed by her mature painting skills and her talents at such a young age. He also finds out that she is locked in a forbidden love affair with a married professor, who works at the university and has become famous. Yu-Li wants to find out the reason why Xiu-Mei was able to paint a work so similar to the other painting. He intends to focus on cultivating Xiu-Mei's artistic talents and overlooks the forbidden love affair she is trapped in. However, when the two gradually become acquainted, Yu-Li realizes that this is not the first time he has met Xiu-Mei. He first encountered her while she was a young child, and he was a college student. He was even close to her now-deceased mother.
