Alcoholic surgeon Jun-Cheng exiles himself to a remote mountain village where he meets a young nurse, Jia-Ai. This young nurse strongly resembles his deceased sister, who was Jun-Cheng’s only family. Just as the two are starting to form an ambiguous relationship, a mysterious disease returns to the village, the same disease that wiped out the entire tribal village in the past. With no time to lose, Jun-Cheng has to solve the mystery of the disease to save the infected Jia-Ai.

Surgeon Jun-Cheng grows up with his sister, the only family member he has. When his sister commits suicide, Jun-Cheng falls apart, and scandals surrounding his drug and alcohol addiction force him to take a break from his medical practice and move to a remote mountain tribe. His neighbor at this temporary residence is a young, pretty nurse, Jia-Ai, who strongly resembles Jun-Cheng’s sister when she was young. Jia-Ai is outspoken, straightforward and full of passion along her path to becoming a doctor. Her personality deeply attracts Jun-Cheng and they start to develop some vague relationship. The economy of the tribe depends on firefly tourism. This year, an unexpected massive increase in fireflies creates a spectacular scene of unsettling beauty. However, Jia-Ai’s close friend, Annie, suddenly falls ill from a strange disease, and her symptoms mirror those of a mysterious disease that prevailed in the village a decade ago. This disease, spontaneous gangrene, was rarely known by the public and when the epidemic began with a pregnant woman, it spread rapidly to the entire village. When all of the villagers perished, the disease became an unsolved mystery. Not long after, this deadly and incurable virulent disease is trailing in the wake of the star-like clusters of fireflies across the entire village. Jun-Cheng’s investigation reveals that the past tragedy coincided with an abnormal surge in the number of fireflies. In some unusual way, the mysterious disease and the fireflies appear to be linked. At the meantime, Jia-Ai starts to show the same symptoms. Now, solving the puzzle and finding the cure becomes an urgent task for Jun-Cheng.
