The Atayal people of Taiwan’s highlands are renowned for their exceptional hunting skills, bravery, and physical endurance. However, young Balong is different—timid by nature, he is especially afraid of the dark and mysterious forests. Pressured by the expectations of his family and tribe, Balong begins to train himself, step by step. Through numerous trials in the mountains, he gradually acquires the wisdom needed to survive and eventually transforms into a courageous youth, worthy of the name he bears.

◆作者介紹：馬筱鳳◆ 出生在金門，在大自然懷抱長大，熱愛生態環境、寫作、閱讀、電影和旅行。在出版社、報社當編輯記者近30年，出版9本兒童小說及合集，翻譯20本圖畫書，也寫自然報導文章和散文。得過好書大家讀年度最佳讀物、金鼎獎系列叢書、九歌現代少兒文學獎、菊島文學獎、生態文學暨報導獎等等。熱愛說故事分享，曾在全省小學、圖書館和故事團體分享繪本，現在在少觀所朗讀繪本，希望成為他人的微光。

作者 Hsiao-Feng Ma
Hsiao-Feng Ma was born on Kinmen Island and grew up embraced by nature. She has a deep passion for ecology, writing, reading, film, and travel. With nearly 30 years of experience as an editor and journalist in publishing houses and newspapers, she has authored nine children's novels and anthologies, translated twenty picture books, and written numerous essays and nature reports. Her work has been recognized with several literary honors in Taiwan, including: – Best Book of the Year (Taipei Public Library Good Books for Everyone) – Golden Tripod Award (Book Series Category) – Chiuko Modern Children's Literature Award – Ecological Literature and Reporting Award —all prestigious literary honors in Taiwan. An enthusiastic storyteller, she has shared picture books and stories in elementary schools, libraries, and storytelling groups across Taiwan. She currently reads picture books aloud at juvenile detention centers, hoping to bring a small light into the lives of others.

Talagay qu yuhum hiya” means “He is brave” in the Atayal language. This book tells the story of a young Atayal boy growing up in the mountains. Through his journey, readers are invited to discover Indigenous wisdom about living in harmony with nature, deep respect for life, and a worldview rooted in gratitude and reverence for the earth.
