Unlike fish that return to their birthplace to reproduce, urban dwellers move between different places, making each stop a possible home. Nurtured by diverse environments and cultures, they grow into who they choose to become. This “selective migration” reflects a way of life in our time—not drifting out of despair, but embracing responsibility. Even in solitude, it is a journey of growth.

In forty essays, writer Chen Te-Cheng—born in the 1980s—reflects on different versions of himself across times and places. He writes of people, cultures, lands, and bodily experiences that shaped him: his influential grandfather, recurring exam dreams, military service in the south, three decades of pro baseball fandom, writing through the pandemic, Gen-X fables, underground bands, the eternal Chang Yu-sheng, climbing Taiwan’s hundred peaks, and distant memories of foreign cultures. This book is both a personal coming-of-age journey and a snapshot of a generation’s shared memories.
