春蘭的丈夫一心追求公理正義，卻在二二八事件時傻了，幾十年來呆坐發楞，沒再開過口。過世前他短暫清醒振筆疾書，所寫的卻全都不見了…… 春蘭的小兒子性格外放，不滿木頭人般的父親，自覺無父，一天到晚往外闖，凡事要爭公平講道理。後來卻走上與父親同樣的路，挺身為人們爭取該有的權利，因而被捕入獄…… 春蘭的孫子也覺得自己無父，只想自己過得好就好。況且他愛的是男生，父親無法認同，但他交往的男友卻都像他父親，有正義感且勇於行動，他為了愛情被拉著一起去反美濃水庫、反樂生迫遷，但其實他對這些活動完全無感。直到接觸了國中生被罷凌致死的事件，才讓他面對多年來一直逃避的恐怖往事…… 春蘭的大兒子當了律師，也從事人權工作，幫弱勢族群和新移民爭取權利。過往被壓迫的台灣人，現在也正壓迫著他人，只是大多數人都當做沒看見，是沉默的共謀者。
The family is not a large and illustrious one, but however few they are in number, they have nonetheless found themselves subject to the turning of the gears of history that would define their eras. Their struggles and resistance demonstrate the transformation of Taiwan over the seven decades since end of Japanese rule. Theirs is a story that touches upon the February 28 Incident of 1948, the era of White Terror, the Kaohsiung or Formosa Magazine Incident, the White Lilly student movement, and the women’s, Aboriginal and immigrant rights movements, as well as the grass roots opposition to construction of the Meinong Reservoir, to bullying in schools, to the forced removal of the residents of Lesheng Village, and to construction of the CPC petrochemical plant. The story demonstrates how individuals, fighting for what is right, have stood up to the government and molded what Taiwan has become today.

Chiatse Hsu is a fiction writer from Kaohsiung. Though he has won a multitude of literary awards, he also writes in genre fiction. His head is filled with stories, and he tells each one in its own way; sometimes just a light and cheerful recounting, sometimes thinking more and digging deeper. His works include the essay collection Father in the Door and the fictional works Peeking, Summer with the Big-Eyed Frog, The Room with the Lights, Almost Lovers, Clan of Fraudsters, I Have A Secret Crush on You, Sir!
