The Contemporaneity of Confucianism : Ecology, Politics, and Culture

This volume comprises twelve essays originally presented at the academic conference Confucian Thought and the 21st Century. The challenges facing Confucian studies today highlight its contemporary relevance. Through the efforts of contemporary New Confucian scholars to "return to the roots and open new paths," Confucian thought has found opportunities for renewal amid adaptation. This renewal has fostered new modes of social communication, allowing scholars not only to draw upon traditional intellectual resources, but also to integrate lived experience into their interpretations. By embracing "contemporaneity" as a perspective for revitalizing thought, Confucian scholars engage with the pressing ecological, political, and cultural issues of our time. Naturally, the challenges confronting contemporary society are manifold and complex. The studies presented here represent only a preliminary exploration of three key areas of concern.
