This volume is the first of three in the History of Interpretations of Mencius series. It explores nine interrelated dimensions of Mencius’s (371–289? BCE) thought, highlighting the dynamic interplay between its internal coherence and external engagement. The first part examines the internal dimensions of Mencian philosophy, including Mencius’s mode of thinking (Chapter 2), his theory of mind and nature (Chapter 3), his hermeneutics of the classics (Chapter 4), and his view of life (Chapter 5). The second part addresses the external dimensions of Mencian thought, such as his perspectives on self and society (Chapter 6), righteousness and profit (Chapter 7), political philosophy (Chapter 8), and historical consciousness (Chapter 9). Building upon this foundation, Volumes II and III—both published in 2022—further investigate the development of Mencian thought in China, Korea, and Japan, thereby offering a comprehensive account of Mencian scholarship across East Asia.
