The research methodology of this book does not focus solely on military aspects, nor does it merely analyze the acts of aggression and counter-aggression between nations. Instead, it begins with the era's defining characteristic—the continuous domestic political struggles within both China and Japan. By integrating the internal factional conflicts and life-or-death struggles of both countries, this study examines the Sino-Japanese interactions surrounding North China. Specifically, it scrutinizes Chiang Kai-shek’s strategies during a series of events, including the Battle of Rehe, the Battle of the Great Wall, the Tanggu Truce, the He–Mei Agreement, and the Marco Polo Bridge Incident. This approach seeks to construct an analytical framework that explores how different historical and spatial contexts shaped Chiang’s subjective will, thereby revealing the substantive meaning of his "Policy of 'Internal Peace Before Foreign Resistance'" and the principles guiding its implementation.
