民間信仰是臺灣漢人地方宗教文化底蘊的重要成分，地方社會的運作中充斥著民間信仰這個潛臺詞。對於臺灣民間宗教文化的認識，若是僅靠媒體的報導或有限的親身經驗，很可能只停留在「8+9」、燒香拜拜、廟會熱鬧活動等刻板印象；這些印象看似具象、讓人習以為常，但個中靈力的真偽及信眾的瘋狂程度，又常給現代人一種神祕與莫名的距離感。本書提供的社會科學解讀，有助讀者跳脫片面及刻板印象的窠臼，獲得多元又不失全貌視域的科學性理解，從而能夠理解為何民間信仰能「去中心卻成整體」、「雖傳統卻又後現代」。 宗教社會學長期以來習慣從信仰來定義並理解宗教，忽略了儀式及儀式的物質性具有更多的潛能。本書透過大量的田野觀察與資料分析，從「境」、「進香」、「陣頭」、「建廟」這四個重要的向度切入，論述為何「儀式」是理解臺灣漢人民間信仰內涵的鎖鑰，並且在分析中提出「隱喻運作」來捕捉民間宗教文化的核心運作。本書嘗試闡述這些奠基於儀式之上的多元隱喻運作，如何創造了許多外溢的抗拒力，以及「宗教」與「非宗教」之間的異質共構，成為說明民間信仰在現代進行擴張、傳散又相互連結為一整體的密碼。這個密碼同時解答了，在現代治理的臺灣，傳統的宗教形式為何仍能持續找到生存與發展的立基點。

Yet, when people try to get a handle on Taiwan’s religious practices through the media or their own limited experiences, they often end up with clichéd notions like the rebellious “8+9” youth, ritual incense burning, and bustling temple fairs. These impressions appear concrete and familiar, yet the authenticity of the deities’ power and the intensity of the believers’ fervor often give modern people a sense of mystery and an inexplicable distance. This book offers an insightful look through a social science lens, breaking through the typical narratives to provide a more nuanced and rich understanding of Taiwan’s religious life. It shows how popular religion in Taiwan can be “decentralized yet integral” and “traditional yet postmodern.”
