Adjunct Lecturer at the General Education Center, National Yunlin University of Science and Technology. Mei-Rong Lin Born in Nantou County, Taiwan. Graduate of the Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology, National Taiwan University. Ph.D. in Social Sciences from the University of California, Irvine. Currently an Adjunct Research Fellow at the Institute of Ethnology, Academia Sinica, and Adjunct Professor at the Institute of Religion and Humanities, Tzu Chi University.

Starting with the springs that emerge from the earth’s surface, this book explores water-related practices in Taiwanese folk customs and religious rituals. It categorizes these into four major themes: everyday life, monthly festivals, beliefs in gods and spirits, and ceremonial rituals. Spanning from springs to the ocean, from the first to the twelfth month of the lunar calendar, the book journeys through divine encounters and ghostly visits. It unpacks the meanings behind ritual practices and sheds light on core concepts in Han folk beliefs. Through vivid case studies and rich imagery, it offers readers a comprehensive look at Taiwan’s waterside traditions.
