The theme of this novel is based on the earliest form of Taiwanese opera. In a dream, the main character is transported back to early 20th-century Taiwan, only to discover that he was once Chen San-Ju, a revered performer of Taiwanese opera. Through singing, acting, and playing instruments, he not only experiences the charm of traditional opera but also inherits the spirit of cultural preservation.

原名賴西安。出生花蓮，定居宜蘭縣羅東鎮。年輕時在校園民歌時代勤於歌詞創作，以〈廟會〉、〈月琴〉、〈散場電影〉最為膾炙人口。同時開始從事兒童文學創作，以《天鷹翱翔》、《順風耳的新香爐》、《再見天人菊》三部作品，連續獲得洪建全兒童文學創作獎少年小說首獎。 1990年以《博士．布都與我》獲得第十五屆國家文藝獎。

Tung Li
Li Tung (1953-2-004), real name Lai Xi-an, was born in Hualien and then settled in Yilan. Li Tung published quite a few popular ballads, such as “Temple Fair”,“Moon Guita”, and “End of a Movie” under his real name Lai Xi-an. His literary works consist of various genres, such as novel, prose, discourse, play, lyrics, new poetry, etc. He was even called “the best writer in the field of the Taiwanese adolescent novel”. Li Tung derived inspiration from daily life, and cared for Taiwan and conditions of ordinary people; his creation is rich in positive and active attitudes towards life.

這部小說的題材「本地歌仔」是臺灣歌仔戲最原始的表演型態。 故事主角弘朋覺得傳統的本地歌仔又土氣又無聊，卻屢次在夢境中回到二十世紀上半葉的臺灣，發現自己的前世竟是備受崇敬的本地歌仔演員陳三如，他搬演唱戲、彈奏樂器，除了體驗到本地歌仔的風采，也承襲了文化傳承的意志。 透過身分和經歷的轉換，一次又一次往復於今生與前世，弘朋體驗到本地歌仔的演出風采、傳統戲曲在日本時代受到的禁治、在戰亂中用生命守護文化的意志……對於今生和未來彷彿也有了更踏實的立足點。

Novelist Li Tung and renowned comic artist Guang-Min Ruan traverse between the history of Taiwan under Japanese colonial rule and traditional culture, exploring the past and present of Taiwanese opera together. They reinterpret the arts and singing skills that are almost lost in the swift current of time. Hong Peng used to consider Taiwanese opera old-fashioned and boring, not to mention learning it. However, he unexpectedly recited the lines from an opera performance flawlessly with a perfect tone and rhythm. To figure this odd situation out, he took a series of hypnotherapy, and went through an adventure back in 1910 to 1950, gaining a newfound understanding of his cultural roots and current life.
