“Who are you trying to lock up with all these cages?” my son asked innocently. Is Taiwan the country with the most animal cages in the world? With so many animals needing shelter, cage factories must be thriving. But do the people who make these cages know they're stacked in shelters, each holding an animal barely able to turn around? Every time I see them, I wonder: why are they so small? Big dogs, small dogs, all crammed into spaces unfit for life. This isn’t a zoo, yet animals must live confined for the long term. And it’s not just the animals who are caged—people here are, too. I’ve drawn staff inside cages, and sometimes even volunteers—not to blame them, but because their empathy lets them truly feel the animals’ plight.
