In-Depth Reporting and Graphic Journalism Salaries can never keep up with skyrocketing housing prices, and despite ongoing policy reforms, speculation remains unchecked. As the housing market evolves, the landscape has shifted—homes are no longer safe havens, but battlegrounds for capital. For many young people, owning a home has become nothing more than a far-fetched dream.

Salaries can never keep up with skyrocketing housing prices, and despite ongoing policy reforms, speculation remains unchecked. As the housing market evolves, the landscape has shifted—homes are no longer safe havens, but battlegrounds for capital. For many young people, owning a home has become nothing more than a far-fetched dream. The nonprofit media outlet The Reporter investigates the real estate speculation chain and visits tiny apartments—just 10 ping (about 33 square meters) yet priced in the tens of millions. Their reporting documents how young people in Taiwan are being pushed into the "era of micro-homes," with unaffordable property prices and ever-increasing rents leaving them little choice. As the economically viable living space shrinks to a bare minimum, discussions of quality of life become nearly impossible. Has the Taiwanese vision of "starting a family" become increasingly confined to a cage-like, cramped existence?
