Inspired by Taiwan’s first recorded blue whale stranding in 2020, A Legend for the Ocean’s Guardians blends fantasy and reality to tell the story of Yun-Jiou, a boy who returns to Taiwan’s east coast and becomes a whale-watching intern. Through learning about marine ecology and culture, and encountering sea spirits, he confronts environmental loss and human history’s wounds. This coming-of-age tale explores themes of nature, cultural memory, and the search for identity and belonging within the ocean’s embrace.
