Xing, a psychiatrist, loses his wife and son in a fire. To fill the void left by their deaths, he builds AI avatars of them, attempting to resurrect his happy family in the metaverse. In real life, guilt prompts him to adopt a baby girl after a patient gives birth to her in the women’s room. Later, he also rescues Yu Shan, the daughter of a wealthy family about to end it all when her company experiences a financial crisis. A life in which three unrelated people live under one roof changes Xing’s definition of family but leaves him conflicted: If he falls in love with Yu Shan, does it count as cheating? This book won the KadoKado Novel Award Grand Prize in 2022. Penned by senior practicing lawyer Peggy Chiu, it is also the first local Taiwanese novel to explore legal and ethical issues related to AI and the metaverse.
