During the pandemic, the author left city life and relocated to Yuli, a small town in eastern Taiwan. This temporary move led to a deep reconnection with nature, community, and memory. Through everyday scenes of misty fields, lively markets, and seasonal flavors, she paints a tender portrait of life at the foot of the sacred mountain. Combining gentle prose with soft illustrations, this book is both a culinary memoir and a reflective journey into belonging.
A wandering soul who finds inspiration wherever she lives, the author enjoys writing, reading, and being close to nature—especially forests and plants, though she’s not quite a green thumb. She writes both fiction and nonfiction, with work appearing in newspapers and magazines, and is also active as a screenwriter. She has received the Cheng Fu-Tian Ecological Literature Award and the Taipei Literature Award.
Three years ago, during the pandemic, author Tan Yu-Chih returned from Shanghai to Taiwan and settled in the rural town of Yuli, Hualien. What began as a temporary stay became a journey of reconnection—with land, time, and community. Through careful observation, she captures the rhythms of rural life: changing seasons, lively markets, native plants, and silent exchanges between people and nature. Divided into four parts, the book covers her arrival (The Charm of the Sacred Mountain), cooking with local crops (The Scent of Plants), memories tied to food (The Taste of Memory), and quiet ecological reflections (The Beauty of Ecology).
