To many, Taiwan’s east coast exists in a different time—forgotten or delayed in perception. Taiwan’s oldest prehistoric sites lie in the east, active on the global stage even before recorded history. Scientific evidence reveals that some Neolithic jade found in Southeast Asia originated from Fengtian, Hualien. The region has also yielded numerous glass beads from West and South Asia, which reached early inhabitants through maritime trade via Southeast Asia. Long part of a vibrant trading network, eastern Taiwan remains underrepresented in dominant historical narratives, leading to its marginalization and neglect. Through extensive travel and fieldwork, yokai researcher and fantasy novelist Xiao Xiang Shen gathers folklore and unofficial histories from the east coast. By fusing personal encounters with historical frameworks, he anchors drifting legends in place—excavating stark truths from within foggy visions and inviting readers to reconsider the edges of memory and myth.
