This book is adapted from the “Biographies of Assassins” chapter in Sima Qian’s Records of the Grand Historian, telling the stories of famous assassins from China’s Eastern Zhou dynasty. It presents their tragic struggles with death and humanity through ink-wash illustrations.

鄭問是台灣著名漫畫家，以融合中國水墨技法與西方繪畫的獨特風格著稱。1984年於《時報周刊》發表漫畫《戰士黑豹》，開啟創作生涯。其代表作包括以《史記·刺客列傳》為題材的水墨漫畫《刺客列傳》，以及在日本講談社連載的《東周英雄傳》。1991年獲得日本漫畫家協會「優秀賞」，成為二十年來首位非日籍得主，被日本《朝日新聞》譽為漫畫界的「天才、鬼才、異才」，日本漫畫界尊稱他為「亞洲至寶」。2000年後，他跨足電玩設計，2012年代表台灣參展法國安古蘭漫畫展。

Chen Uen
Chen Uen was a renowned Taiwanese comic artist, famous for his unique style that blends traditional Chinese ink wash techniques with Western painting. He began his career in 1984 with the publication of Warrior Panther in Taiwan’s China Times Weekly. His notable works include Legends of Assassins, an ink-wash comic based on the “Biographies of Assassins” from Sima Qian’s Records of the Grand Historian, and The Heroes of Eastern Zhou, serialized by Kodansha in Japan. In 1991, Chen was awarded the Japanese Cartoonists Association’s Excellence Award, becoming the first non-Japanese recipient in 20 years. The Asahi Shimbun praised him as a “genius, prodigy, and maverick” in the comic world, and the Japanese comics industry honored him as a “treasure of Asia.” After 2000, he expanded into video game design and represented Taiwan at the Angoulême International Comics Festival in France in 2012.

Based on the “Biographies of Assassins” from the Han-dynasty historian Sima Qian’s Records of the Grand Historian, this book tells the stories of the noted assassins Cao Mu, Yu Rang, Zhuan Zhu, Nie Zheng and Jing Ke of China’s Eastern Zhou dynasty. Working from his strong sense of humanity, Chen Uen gives his own interpretation of the original work’s tragic tone. He transforms Sima Qian’s elegant prose into rich images using ink-wash techniques giving the stories a discordant tension for a new age.
