Encounter the Truest Force of Life: A Training Diary of a Mental Health Counselor
The narrator was a headache for teachers when he was a student, but he grew up to be a mental health counselor mainly for teenagers and children. Riding a motorbike, he comes back and forth among the schools in Tainan, trying to find a way of dealing with life together with students, parents and teachers. The cases’ stories intertwine with the narrator’s own growing-up scenarios. While he looks upon his past experiences, the distance between him and the cases are bringing closer.
Introduction
I'm a mental health counselor mainly working with teenagers and children, so I spend most of my time hanging with the so-called “problem children.” When I was a kid, an oracle said I was destined to be a “bad seed,” and I did take fights, cut classes and get school warnings. Decades pass by, I have a degree in counseling psychology and once served as a counseling teacher at a high school. Each counseling is like a trip through memory lane: I see my younger self when I look at these kids’ eyes; every interaction feels like dialoguing with my former self. My job makes me visit different schools everyday like a pizza delivery guy. The people I met during growing up and the cases I meet when I am an adult are unique--they are the truest force in my training to become a mental health counselor.
