Introduction

Xiang Ru Chen (Ru) was a thirty-year-old woman who not only held on to everything. Neither could she ever let go of anything. She worked only temporary jobs. Such as stand-in in hospitals for other patients, or gofer for wedding proposal or break-up ceremony. She would take up any odd jobs that popped up. Living the hand to mouth life. In her free time, she liked to go visit the fortune telling granny in an underground shopping strip where her stall was. As always, granny told her, ‘if he is not meant to be, you've got to let him go. One day, Ru was dragged to visit a temple with her best friend to wish for a good matrimony. Ru's girlfriend rolled her eyes when she heard Ru wishing for an impossible Mr. right that comes with a long list of additional causes. The friend said that Ru might as well wish for a perfectly made man like the papier Mache man sold by the funeral home. Ru bought a paper made man home as a joke. Ru came home and left the paper man randomly stagged up on top of her already dangerously piled up books. The next day, she woke up and found her messy room tidy. Ru peered at the lifeless paper man and decidedly treated the tidiness to her sleep walking. Never could she imagine the following days. It was as if a house genie that showed up, tidied the room, and did the laundry. By accident, she smelled the same fragrance on the paper man as her clean laundry. She came to believe that the paper man she brought home had transformed into "house geni". She got frightened out of her wits and escaped home. She asked the fortune telling granny for help, but granny said it again, ‘if it meant to be, there's no escape. Ru braced herself and tried to force the ghost out from the paper man by threatening it with a lighter. The ghost revealed himself. Ru couldn’t believe her eyes; it looked exactly like her boyfriend who died in a car crash. Yet he didn't seem to recognize her. He said that he was drawn to her when he overheard her wish in the temple. Ru faced a dilemma that whether he was her dead boyfriend or not? If he was, how could she bring back his memory? Let alone a ghost's memory! She consulted fortune telling granny what she should do. Granny replied that Ru should try to help the paper man to finish his unresolved business so that he could move on to his next life. In order to bring back the paper man's lost memory, Ru decided to take him wherever she went. Maybe a slightest sign could bring back the memory. The stand-in jobs, such as cueing overnight in front of a temple so that she could grab the first incense for her client or pretending to be a potential buyer in a real estate agency, were normally tedious. With paper man by her side, these jobs became interesting suddenly, for she had someone to share it with. As for the paper man, he saw the energy and dynamics Ru exuded at work despite the oddity of the jobs. He fell in love with Ru who had passion and was committed to her life despite the chaotic oddity.
