In use since 2015, ‘Companions of the Forest’ is a patented trademark of Du Hansong, a Rukai of Haocha Village, Wutai, Pingdong County, Taiwan. Du Hansong used to tell stories about tribal culture through his illustrated books but constantly ran up against stereotypes of indigenous life and so changed tack to present himself as the Wild Boar from the mountain forest, who, in conjunction with the Lowland Piggy from the city and many other good animals from the forest, tells stories that cross-culture.
The cheeky poses of the animals and their joyful interaction are a metaphor for the indigenous peoples and weave the wisdom of the forest with the lore of our ancestors. They also seek to hand on an ecological lesson for today. The ‘Companions of the Forest’ are presented in two formats: as colorful illustrations and as large 3-D figures. All are created in a unique and highly artistic style that appeals to people of all ages. There can be no better way to pass on our culture to you.
