Introduction

This is the story of Ruyue, a girl who grew up in a small Hakka village and went to the city to chase her dreams. From the ‘70s to the modern day, the lives of three generations of women come alive under the author’s pen, allowing readers to find their own footprints in characters surrounded by the bustling history of the maze-like city of Taipei. After her parents' divorce, Internet celebrity Xiaoyu is confronted with a major life decision. Stumbling upon her aunt’s letter alongside five rolls of audio tape, her mother’s past with Ruyue is revealed and she finds a chance for a new life. Zhang Zhixin portrays different responses to the trials of life and the helplessness and perseverance of women faced with hardship and choices, displaying Hakka women’s vitality as they overcome their fates. The magnificent reappearance of Ximending’s Wannian Department Store, Shizilin Building, ice rinks, cafes, etc., are metaphors for this city used to describe the changes in society and the times, the approach of the age of the Internet, as well as the economic impacts faced by business. As brilliant as the sea, brimming with pitfalls, it is a city of vicissitudes and beauty.
