GHOST TRICKS
Good old-fashioned police work + Mystical forces of the supernatural = A compelling page-turned combining the best of the whodunit and the ghost story.
Introduction
The wife of a finance company president is found dead at her home. Rumors are spreading that it was a ghost that killed her. Ah-che and Ma, criminal investigators of the city police department, are in charge of the case. Ma discovers that the videos and images purporting to show a ghost killing the victim may all have scientific explanations. Meanwhile, Wu Tian-tsai, the finance company president who is the main suspect for the case, has multiple perfect alibis. A battle of wits thus begins between the investigators and the suspect. The plot flashes back to Ma's childhood. Ma inherited psychic abilities from his parents, and he is capable of summoning spirits. Many spirits have come to him since Ma was a child. After Ma's parents died, he was adopted by an uncle, and he eventually followed in his uncle's footsteps by becoming a cop. Ma's uncle is also his commanding officer, the captain of the Criminal Investigation Division. Ma's uncle is troubled by his nephew’s indifference to authority, yet he also needs Ma's detective skills. Another flashback deals with Wu Tian-tsai's experiences growing up. A precocious child, he masterminded a plot to have his abusive father fall to his death in an accident. He then put himself through school and won a government scholarship to study in the US, then met and married Wang Mei-ling. He then entered the world of finance and worked his way to the top of his company. Ma re-investigates the aspects of the case that had to do with Wu, and sees through Wu's subliminal messaging to the people involved. Finally, as Wu is about to kill Ma's girlfriend, Ma uses his supernatural powers to summon the spirit of Wu's dead wife onto the body of his own girlfriend. He is able to break through Wu's defenses and elicit a confession regarding his guilt.
